If the bottleneck is graphics, it really doesn’t matter what CPU you throw at it. This was the cheat that AMD used to show off their Bulldozer.

I’m not that interested in Bulldozer. You alluded to this, but each Bulldozer module contains 2 integer cores, 1 FPU core, and 1 shared fetch/decode/execute units. So an “8-core” bulldozer only contains 4 FPUs. This is a buzzkill if you are doing something heavy in floating point. Doesn’t bode well for weather modeling.

Bulldozer is fine for high-end games. The bottle-neck for these games is the GPU. Those benchmarks that AMD released for Dirt 3 showed that. I s’pose if a game is heavy with AI and physics, then you might see a hit.

Idea from another podcast… Nintendo’s next hand-held should be a customized Android-based device with the usual thumb sticks and buttons. So now we have a device with touch, motion sensing and thumb control. The hand-held will be coupled with a Nintendo specific Android store for games/apps targeting this device. These apps would help it compete against the Boxee/Roku/Google TVs of the world. HDMI for hooking up to bigger displays.

It will not be the last one. A toy is a toy, and not a phone. That’s how parents think, especially around Christmas and birthdays. And there are still very few parents how buy iPhones for their 12 year old kids.

And while gaming on my phone is a nice timekiller, I’m reluctant to play games on my mobile connection to the world in general, as long as battery life is still an issue.

I see that Diggnation is calling it quits. There is now a big gaping hole in the “drunk podcast on a couch” demographic. Opportunity is knocking…

Getting old and wordy sucks. I remember when it was all fields round here.

Sometimes I wonder how much more dynamic and productive my life might have been if I hadn’t read my boss’s copy of PC Zone(UK) back in ’93. A preview of IndyCar Racing caught my eye, followed by one for the flight sim Tornado. Shortly after that I cleared out my savings and bought a PC… which I immediately had to upgrade because 2MB of RAM just wasn’t enough.

Some things never change.

Anyway, it was nice to hear some Widget lurve for Papyrus and IndyCar Racing. Many from that original team are now working on the iRacing project, which is ridiculously serious, stupidly expensive (in gaming terms), and annoyingly addictive. I swear it’s the most frustrating and yet satisfying sim experience I’ve ever had, and I regularly alternate between wanting to have its babies and rage quitting.

Still, at least I can get frustrated in ultra-wide Eyefinity mode now rather than at 320×240 on a 14″ CRT. Having said that, I’ve just spent longer than I care to admit watching a pixelated IndyCar Racing movie on YouTube. Suddenly it doesn’t seem like ten minutes ago, let alone almost 20 years.

Nostalgia eh, there ought to be a law against it. Then I might actually get some work done for a change… though nowhere near as much as if I’d never bought that first PC!

I used to think I’d never use anything other than a mechanical keyboard. But then I accidentally bought a Cherry low profile, laptop style keyboard. At first touch I hated it… I needed more travel. But I very quickly adjusted, and now when I switch back to what I used to consider superior style keyboards I’m a bit lost. My new tactile finger friend seems to encourage a gentler, quieter, and more fluid form of manual message massage.

Sadly it still doesn’t stop me typing crap.

I sort of want to be wrong, and maybe a Das would bring me back to the Light Side, but I’ll never find out because I’m way too tight to spend that kind of cash on a keyboard… no matter how important input devices are. I’d only give it a coffee bath at some point and kill it.

I’ve had my Samsung Galaxy S2 for a few days now and it is freakin awesome.

The only thing I changed straight away was dumping Samsung Touchwiz in favour of LauncherPro as my “home screen” app. I’m pretty sure its root’able, custom ROMs are available and its overclockable too – good times ahead!

On another note, I highly doubt the new Nintendo console will carry the Wii branding since people have such a perception of the Wii as a casual gaming system and I think they will be looking to get away from that image with a console packing such a huge jump in performance. I really think (and there might be some hope in there too) that they will be attempting to directly compete with the current console generation and ever-so-slightly beyond.

Just a note, I’m a libertarian but I guess my last comment was a little slanted. I technically am an American citizen as a company I use to work for sponsored me to work there and they said it would be far easier in the long term if I just got my citizenship, also my wife is American so are both our kids, so I hope you don’t think I have any negative feelings towards the US.

The US legal system is quite different to the UK system, arguably the US system is much more corrupt as the US government are in the pocket of big business, plus the underlying laws are different.

The UK police don’t really care about intellectual property unless the property owner is pushing, and they don’t pass on data to other departments unless requested to.

As for recovering data, yep, even if you smash the platters of your hdd with a hammer, its technically posable to recover some data, although at that point you would have really had to piss someone off or do something really bad for them to invest the amount of time and money it takes to recover data.

If you overwrite the data multiple times to department of defense data wiping standards whatever they might recover would be unlikely to help secure a conviction as it could be argued that the data had been tampered with. There are very strick guidelines in relation to the handling of data when it comes to evidence.

Fortunately if you live in the UK you can get a fair trial even if you’re broke, as legal aid is quite good and you don’t have prosecutions for political reasons. The only way to get a fair trial in the US is to be financially well off.

Anyway, I was looking for a mid-level GFX card replacement and picked up a PaLiT GTS 450 for under $100 and am super satisfied with it thus far. I don’t engage in a ton of PC gaming, so this will serve my purposes just fine. I am amazed however at the inclusion of the Vtune desktop software and how far the overclock slider is able to go. I may just save that for when the card is showing it’s age. But, thanks for turning me on to the PaLiT name. Great show and keep up the good work.

A big “Fuck You!” to Motorola for locking the bootloader on the Milestone (the GSM version of the Droid) and not confirming that Android 2.2 will even arrive in Europe.

So my 9 month old Milestone is likely to be stuck with buggy 2.1 software and a locked bootloader. No custom ROMs and no official support. So much for the “phone without compromise” and “flash ready”

Kinect is not just a “me to” technology. That’s what Sony came out with. Kinect takes motion control to the next step. It has a full 3 dimensions of detection. Cripes, it can probably probe your genitalia to see if you are a boy or a girl. It will be the titles that will make or break this thing. The E3 titles did look retarded.

With my Droid Incredible, I was able to get a one year deal, just had to pay and extra $70 up front. Then I go month-to-month. That seemed like the best way to go. I don’t like falling too far behind on tech, and this lets me update more quickly.

Physical Address Extension, it means 32bit windows can use up to 128gb but still a single app is limited to 32^2

Correct about windows 32-bit and ram recognition. There are patches that can be put on to force a 32-bit os to recognise more than the 3.12Gb limit but as you’ve mentioned, now program can address the extra memory so its still pretty useless.

5770=4870 wrt performance. DX11 will not matter on a medium level card in it’s first generation. If you can get a 4890/4870 for less than the 5770 (which might be getting harder because of availability) it might be a good option. I would not upgrade a 4850 to a 5770. I don’t think it will be a great performance upgrade unless you want eyefinity.

Stupid Adobe and Flash have never agreed. Try rocking something at 50FPS, using FuseKit, Tweenlite, etc… for straight AS animations and watch your Mac flip out.

Few points about the sound bar I’d like to add. Yes it was over priced, cost us a cool £800 back in November ’08, however I think it’s much cheaper now. Also, we have it in the worst possible setup. If it was against a flat wall, with walls either side with no openings/windows I think it would give half decent projection behind you. However we have it in a corner, with an archway through to the dining room on one side and a window on the other.. to basically it’s crippled before it even begins

Second point, I do use it with a seperate sub, we tried it first without and it just lost that character to we hooked up the old sub from our previous all-in-one DVD player and it gave us just what we needed. Of course it could be better, but it works.

Thanks for the ideas on an alternative Paul, and although I’m likely to stick with the sound bar, I will certainly look into the ideas. Mainly we are in stuck with front speakers only as we have laminate flooring and haven’t placed speaker cable under it, secondly, the soundbar looks really quite good, and whilst I’m all for function over form, in the living room we have to take that into account also. I’ll see if I can get a pic of the setup posted somewhere

Emmanuel Goldstein from 2600 did work as an adviser on the film and I’d say the one thing they did get right in the film was the odd mix of people.
